Main Window

The Compass main window is a compact floating shell: a menu bar and a toolbar, with no document area of its own. Everything the application does is reached from here, and the charts it opens live in their own separate windows.

The window sizes itself to its content and cannot be resized. On first launch it opens centered on the screen; after that it reopens wherever you last parked it, and a saved position that no longer falls on any connected screen is centered again automatically.

In This Window​

  • Main Menu Bar: the full list of everything Compass can do, grouped into Charts, Edit, View, and Help menus, plus a File menu on Windows.
  • Main Toolbar: one-click icons for the commands you use constantly, with the update button and the theme switch at the right.
  • Toggle Theme: the application-wide switch between the Light and Dark themes, with your choice kept for next time.
  • Keep Main Window on Top: the checkable View-menu item that floats the shell above your chart windows so the launcher stays reachable.
  • Exit Application: the command that shuts Compass down, saving the shell's position on the way out.

Starting and Positioning the Shell​

To start Compass:

  • Windows: Double-click the Compass desktop shortcut, or open Compass from the Start menu.
  • macOS: Open Compass from the Applications folder.

To move the shell somewhere more convenient:

  • Drag the shell by its title bar to the position you want on the desktop.

The shell reopens at that position the next time Compass starts.
