Main Window

The main window is Compass's compact floating shell: a small, non-resizable window that holds a menu bar, a toolbar, and a theme switch, with no document area. Every chart, editor, and settings window is launched from here, so the main window is built to stay out of the way while you work.

The window sizes itself to its content and centers on screen the first time you launch Compass. After that, it reopens at the position where you last left it, remembered alongside your keep-on-top preference.

On macOS, the menus appear in the native menu bar at the top of the screen rather than inside the window itself.

In this section​

  • Main Menu Bar: The primary map of the application, gathering every command under the File, Charts, Edit, View, and Help menus.
  • Main Toolbar: A strip of one-click buttons that mirror the most-used chart and settings commands, plus the update button and theme switch.
  • Toggle Theme: Switch the application between its light and dark appearance.
  • Keep Window on Top: Keep the launcher floating above your chart windows so it stays within reach.
  • Exit Application: Close Compass cleanly, saving the window's position for next time.

Launching and moving the window​

To start Compass:

  • Double-click the Compass shortcut on your desktop.

You can also launch Compass from the Start menu or Applications folder, or from the Dock or Launchpad on macOS. When it opens, the menu bar, toolbar, and theme switch are ready to use.

Once the window is open, you can move it wherever you like:

  • Drag the window by its title bar to a new position on screen.

Compass remembers the new location and restores it the next time you open the application.
