Save Workspace
Saving writes the workspace, and every study and setting it holds, to a .cygnus file so you can reopen the studies and generate them again later. After a successful save the Changes are saved indicator turns green.
Two commands are available. Save writes back to the file the workspace came from, asking where to put it the first time. Save As always asks, and renames the workspace to match the file name you choose, so the window title and the Studies list header follow the new name.
Save the Workspace
To write the workspace back to its own file:
- Open the File menu.
- Click Save in the File menu.
Pressing Ctrl+S (Cmd+S on macOS) does the same thing, as does the Save button on the Toolbar.
Save is disabled when there is nothing to save. It is also unavailable while another save or load is in progress, and while a study is generating records. A workspace that has never been saved has no destination yet, so Cygnus asks for one with the same picker Save As uses.
Save the Workspace Under a New Name
Use this to keep a copy of a workspace under a different name, leaving the original file untouched.
To save under a new name:
- Open the File menu.
- Click Save As in the File menu.
- Choose the folder and file name. See Save a File from the OS Save Dialog below.
Unlike Save, Save As stays available even when the workspace has no unsaved changes.

Several Cygnus commands ask your operating system to show its standard save-file picker, already filled in with a suggested name and extension. Save As uses it, and so do Export Records to CSV and Export Locations.
To choose where the file goes:
- Navigate to the destination folder.
- Enter the file name.
- Click Save.
The picker closes and Cygnus writes the file to the path you chose.
Cancel the OS Save Dialog
To back out without writing anything:
- Click Cancel.
The picker closes, no file is written, and the command that opened it stops.
