Run Study

Generating turns the parameters you configured into actual ephemeris data. On all nine study types the Run button sits at the left end of the button bar beneath the results area. That bar starts to the right of the settings column, not at the editor's far-left edge.

Before You Generate​

Define every generation parameter before you generate the records:

  • A location, which is required for every study type, including geocentric and heliocentric ones, because record dates and times are calculated in the location's time zone. See Basic Ephemeris Settings.
  • The Reference System: the Zodiac and the Ref. Plane. The third component, the coordinate origin, is fixed by the study type you created. See Basic Ephemeris Settings.
  • The date range and interval. See Ephemeris Date Range.
  • The bodies and the measurements you want reported. See Bodies List and Body Metrics List.

The study must also be unlocked, and no generation can already be in progress on it.

Generate the Study's Records​

Once the study is configured:

  • Click the Run button at the left end of the button bar beneath the results area.

A percentage progress indicator appears beside the button while the generation proceeds. When it finishes, Cygnus fills the ephemeris table, or plots the curves on a graphic ephemeris study, and the record count fades in below the results.

While the Generation Is Running​

The Generator is running status indicator turns green for as long as any study in the workspace is producing records. If you realize the date range or interval is wrong, you do not have to wait it out. See Cancel Record Generation.

What Happens After the Records Are Generated​

When the generation completes, the study locks. Its settings become read-only, so the output on screen always matches the parameters that produced it.

caution

The Run button becomes invisible once the records have been generated, and it stays invisible for as long as the study is locked. It reappears only after you unlock the study with the Unlock button. This is expected behavior, not a missing control. See Unlock Study.

Some things remain available on a locked study: you can still rename it, change which metrics are shown, rearrange and hide table columns, jump to a date, copy rows, and export to CSV. Changing anything that would alter the data itself, such as the date range or the body selection, requires unlocking, which discards the generated records.
