Why a Chart Needs a Place

The Location dropdown sits at the top of every study in Aquila and every chart in Compass, above the zodiac, the origin and the plane. It is first for a reason. Almost everything the application is about to calculate depends on it.

It is tempting to read a location as a label — a note recording where something happened, the way a photograph carries the name of the town it was taken in. It is not. It is an input, and changing it changes the answer.

The same instant, two skies

Two people look up at the same moment. One is in Paris, one in New York. They are looking at the same universe, at the same instant, and they do not see the same sky.

One celestial sphere carrying a single star and the horizons of two observers drawn as two great circles: at the same moment the star stands 55° above the horizon at Paris and only 20° above the horizon at New York.

One star. One moment. Two observers, each carrying their own horizon — and the star stands 55° above the ground for one of them and 20° above it for the other.

Neither is mistaken. The star has one position, and the two of them are measuring it against different floors.

Push the two observers further apart and the disagreement grows until it stops being a disagreement about how high and becomes one about whether at all. A star riding high over Paris can be entirely below the horizon in Sydney, invisible, on the other side of the world. Same instant. Same star.

What the place actually supplies

A location is three numbers and a name, and one further thing that follows from them:

The first three are entered. The fourth is not: which zone a place keeps is a fact about the place, so it follows once the coordinates are known.

Where this appears in the applications

Locations are entered once and used everywhere. A study in Aquila, a chart in Compass, the application defaults — all of them select from the same list, and all of them mean the same thing by it: measure from here.

What comes next

A place has to be named precisely before it can be used, and "New York" is not precise enough for the job. The answer is a pair of angles.
